Israel mourns the fall of Staff Sergeant Michael Tiukin (of blessed memory)
A sad day for the State of Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today (31.05.2026) the fall in battle in southern Lebanon of Staff Sergeant Michael Tiukin (of blessed memory), a fighter in the Givati Reconnaissance unit. Tiukin, who immigrated from Ukraine six years ago and lived in Ashkelon, fought, according to Netanyahu, "heroically deep in Lebanese territory" as part of his military service which was driven by a "tremendous sense of mission."
The news of his death sparked a wave of condolences among the political echelon, with MK Boaz Bismuth also expressing his deep pain over the loss. Conversely, critical voices identified with opposition-oriented channels, such as Bjaffz, appeared on social media, harshly attacking the leadership, claiming it has been "600 days of abandonment," and criticizing the government's performance regarding drone threats.
Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the tense security situation in the north, Minister of Education Yoav Kisch announced that matriculation exams will not be held this week in areas under Home Front Command restrictions. According to Kisch, "My policy is clear: Israel's students will not take matriculation exams under fire," adding that the internal grade will determine the students' achievements. Decisions regarding the continuation of the exam period will be made based on a weekly situational assessment.
