[66968] Lebanon at a Crossroads: Controversial Amnesty Legislation and Calls for Negotiations with Israel
The Lebanese political system in a period of internal turmoil and political initiatives
In the shadow of a severe crisis in the Lebanese prison system, the parliament is expected to discuss today the advancement of the "General Amnesty Law." As reported on the Asrar Lubnan | Lebanon Secrets channel, the purpose of the law is to release many prisoners due to lack of space in prisons, with the law serving as a "platform for a quiet constitutional struggle between the blocs in Lebanon."
According to the channel, which is identified with critical positions toward the Lebanese system, there is a dispute surrounding the release of prisoners defined as "heavy" – convicted criminals or those awaiting the death penalty. While conservative elements on the Christian side fear the release of dangerous prisoners, Sunni elements are working for a more comprehensive release. The Asrar Lubnan channel notes that the fact that Hezbollah is barely mentioned in this context raises questions about its attempt to "keep a low profile" to avoid political conflicts or as a result of media bias.
At the same time, in the political arena, exceptional voices are being heard calling for a change in approach toward Israel. According to a report by the Kan 11 | Arab-Palestinian Desk channel, Lebanese MP Ghassan Hasbani claimed that "public opinion in Lebanon supports the approach of conducting negotiations with Israel" as the only remaining option to stop the fighting.
Hasbani emphasized in an interview with "Al-Hadath" channel, as brought by Kan 11, the critical need to concentrate weaponry in the hands of the Lebanese army only. According to him, this is a "sovereign constitutional decision" necessary to prevent wars broken out by entities other than the state, noting that currently "the decision on peace and war is not in the hands of the Lebanese government."
