[52172] Sharp confrontation between the Minister of Education and university heads: Threat of budgetary sanctions
Tension in academia: Minister of Education demands political neutrality
Minister of Education Yoav Kisch has issued an ultimatum to the heads of universities in Israel: commit in writing to refrain from promoting political agendas in higher education institutions, or face legislation that will impose budgetary sanctions. According to Hot News and NTD Hebrew News, the demand comes against the backdrop of a "series of political steps" taken by university heads recently.
In a letter he sent, Kisch demands that the institutions commit to three central principles: refraining from taking an institutional political stance, ensuring the continuity of academic activity, and preventing disruptions or strikes originating from political struggles. Yinon Magal, who is identified with right-wing positions and support for the government, quoted the Minister of Education as saying: "We are putting an end to the politicization by university presidents. If they wish to promote a political agenda, they are welcome to resign from their positions and run in elections".
Kisch's plan includes promoting legislation by Member of Knesset Avichai Boaron, which will codify the boundaries of permitted political activity and allow for the withholding of budgets from institutions that deviate from the rules. The News Arena emphasized the Minister's threat of economic sanctions as a tool for enforcing institutional neutrality.
On the other hand, it was reported in War Room that the Association of University Heads rejects the claims and accuses the Minister of ulterior motives. According to a report in 'Haaretz' brought in War Room, the Forum of University Heads claimed that they "will not allow Kisch to drag academia into his political survival struggles."
