Dramatic development in Hebron: Renovation and roofing works at the Cave of the Patriarchs
Following Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's decision to expropriate planning powers from the Hebron Municipality, massive construction and renovation works began tonight (July 1, 2026) at the Cave of the Patriarchs complex. According to NTD Hebrew News, this is a historic move that includes the construction of roofing, installation of electrical, air conditioning, and drainage infrastructure, and the arrangement of lighting in the complex.
During a tour conducted by Finance Minister Smotrich and Minister Orit Strock, with the participation of representatives of the Settlement Administration and the Civil Administration, Minister Smotrich emphasized that the action expresses Israeli sovereignty in the area. According to him, the move represents a connection to the national roots: "This amazing and magnificent roofing... this is touching the deepest roots – 'why we are here' and what we are fighting for." The report on the importance of the move for strengthening sovereignty was also confirmed by Zirat HaHadashot.
Eyal Gelman, head of the Hebron Municipal Administration, noted that this is the realization of efforts spanning over 20 years: "We have been privileged to go up a level in the strength of the national spirit - to erect the roofing at the Cave of the Patriarchs and honor the resting place of the founders of our nation."
In parallel with the government activity on the ground, Finance Minister Smotrich strongly criticized the judicial system. In Political Updates, which are identified with the positions of the national camp, the minister attacked the High Court of Justice's decision to freeze appointments of senior public officials, including the appointment of the State Comptroller and the Director of the Israel Land Authority. According to the report, Smotrich accused Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and her "Supreme Court friends" of "judicial dictatorship" and called on the public to respond to this at the ballot box.
