Pakistani Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, announced today in the Pakistani Parliament his intention to travel to Tehran at the head of an official delegation to attend the funeral ceremony of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. According to various reports, including those from Akhbar-e Fouri and Akharin Khabar (an Iranian news agency affiliated with the establishment), Sharif emphasized that he is acting on behalf of the entire Pakistani people.
The decision was made following a phone call that Sharif held with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian. According to reports from the IRNA news agency as well as Tabriz Khabarlary, the meeting and ceremonies are expected to be held on July 3rd and 4th.
At the same time, reports in Al-Arabiya Persian – a media outlet sometimes identified with a critical line toward the regime in Iran – note that as part of the same diplomatic contact, Iranian President Pezeshkian accepted Sharif's invitation and is expected to officially visit Pakistan at a future date, a step that indicates the tightening of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The announcement of participation was widely circulated in official and pro-government Iranian channels, including the IRGC channel and the SNN student agency, which emphasized Sharif's commitment to the visit as a national "duty." So far, no tensions or voices opposing this move have been reported within the political system in Pakistan according to the examined sources.
