USA and Iran: The beginning of a 60-day window to settle relations
United States Vice President, J.D. Vance, announced on Wednesday, June 18, 2026, that starting Thursday, a 60-day framework approved by President Donald Trump and the leadership of the Islamic Republic has come into effect. According to Iran International, the goal is to examine Iran's change in behavior, with Vance emphasizing that "the Islamic Republic did not attack any ship during the night," and that since the signing of the memorandum of understanding, about 12.5 million barrels of oil have been transported in the Gulf.
In a series of statements from the White House, Vance noted that the US sees this move as a "strategic turnaround" for the region, and claimed that Iran under its new leadership is in a position of economic and nuclear weakness. According to him, the US expects Iran to cease funding "regional terrorism and instability." The IRNA news agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian regime, confirmed the start of the diplomatic marathon but refrained from elaborating on the conditions of the required concessions.
Regarding Israel, Vance emphasized that the Trump administration will not abandon its ally, but clarified that Jerusalem must respect the peace process. In a conversation with Iran International, Vance jabbed at the Israeli political echelon by saying: "If I were a member of the Israeli cabinet, I probably wouldn't attack my only strong ally."
Various sources, including the Telegram channel 'Akhbar-e Fouri', compared the new framework to the 2015 nuclear deal, with Vance claiming that unlike the past, the current agreement does not include the transfer of funds from the US and mandates the dismantling of fissile material stockpiles. At the same time, the Revolutionary Guards channel presented a narrative according to which the economic pressure from the US continues, and that any relief is conditional on a radical change in behavior by Tehran.
