Tension with the US: Tehran declares its status as a superpower
In a series of statements released on May 4, 2026, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei rejected the question of why Iran is not deterred by what was described by reporters as an American "superpower." In response, Baghaei replied firmly: "Iran is also a superpower", as reported by the IRNA news agency, which is identified with the official line of the Iranian administration.
The message was repeated across many Iranian media outlets, including Sepah News Channel (identified with the Revolutionary Guards), Akharin Khabar, and Hamian-e Pezeshkian. The spokesperson emphasized that the American attempt to exert pressure through the nuclear issue is merely an "excuse", and called on countries of the world not to cooperate with what he termed "illegal actions by the US."
In addition, the spokesperson clarified that "due to the destructive conduct of the US", every attempt at diplomatic dialogue with the current administration in Washington has failed thus far. This position reflects the hardline political path led by Tehran, while attempting to demonstrate power and sovereignty in the face of ongoing Western sanctions and pressure.
