[44979] Iran 2026: Economic collapse, disconnection from the world, and deep social fragmentation under a 'state of war'
Iran in the Spring of 2026: Between economic repression and the struggle for survival
According to ongoing reports on Iran International, Iranian citizens describe a catastrophic economic reality under what they have defined as a "state of ceasefire." Residents report an unprecedented surge in the prices of food, medicine, and technology, where according to one user, the prices of basic commodities have tripled, and the purchase of basic goods has become a "distant wish." Internet blocks continue, leading to the paralysis of businesses, academia, and daily life, while the costs of accessing the network through circumventing channels are soaring to "fanciful" prices of millions of Tomans.
Conversely, the "Vatan Emrooz" newspaper, identified with the regime's positions, presents a completely different narrative. The newspaper claims that following the leader's death on March 9, 2026, a "spontaneous mobilization" was created among the public and that citizens are demonstrating patience and "resilience in a state of war." The newspaper emphasizes that the Iranian public is united in a "historical consciousness" against the calls of the opposition and the West, and refuses to cooperate with what it calls "the enemy's attempts to undermine stability."
On the ground, reality seems much more complex. Multiple testimonies on Iran International point to the existence of "shifts" of regime supporters in the streets who receive payment and benefits, while the average citizen struggles to survive without a source of income. Workers report mass layoffs, and students complain of discrimination, as while the internet is blocked for the general public, lecturers and officials enjoy free access.
The technology channel Farda provided a bleak historical comparison, highlighting the deterioration of the currency situation. While in July 2024 the dollar exchange rate stood at 60,000 Tomans, today it crosses the 175,000 Toman threshold. The channel summarizes the gloomy situation by saying: "It seems that in the future we will need to learn to light a fire with stones instead of programming."
