Commemorative gestures in the shadow of war: Civilians and Russian forces lay flowers at memorial sites in Ukraine
Over the last few days, symbolic commemorative gestures have been reported at Soviet memorial sites in major cities in Ukraine, occurring in the shadow of the ongoing military conflict. According to the DD Geopolitics channel, which identifies with a pro-Russian stance and frequently covers Russian military actions, residents in Kharkiv were seen laying flowers at a monument in memory of Soviet soldiers who fell in battle according to DD Geopolitics.
Similar reports arrived from the capital, Kyiv, where residents reached the "Eternal Glory" obelisk to lay flowers. The Two Majors - English Channel, which conveys reports from the Russian military side and its surroundings, confirmed that "Kyiv residents are bringing flowers to the Eternal Glory obelisk" according to Two Majors. This information was also verified by DD Geopolitics in a parallel report.
At the same time, DD Geopolitics reported on an unusual event in Kherson, which is under Ukrainian control. According to the channel, Russian forces used a drone to fly flowers to the "Park of Glory" memorial complex in the city, in an action described by them as a gesture from "Russian fighters" according to DD Geopolitics.
These events reflect the struggle over the historical narrative and collective memory in the region, as both sides make use of traditional ceremonies to convey ideological messages within Ukrainian territory.
