[94041] Explosion at an industrial facility in the Ras Laffan area in Qatar
Reports of an explosion at an industrial facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar
Over the past day, numerous Arab media outlets reported on a powerful explosion heard in the area of the capital Doha and the Ras Laffan industrial area. Reuters was among the first to report on the sounds of the explosion heard across the Qatari capital, a report that gained wide resonance on social networks and news channels.
The Qatari Ministry of Interior issued an official statement confirming that "an internal explosion occurred in one of the factories in the Ras Laffan industrial area." In the statement, published inter alia on Al Jazeera, it was noted that civil defense teams are operating at the site, and that the incident ended "without casualties or leaks" that could pose a danger. Other sources, such as the 'Ajel' channel, added that the explosion stemmed from a "technical malfunction."
Despite official statements regarding the lack of casualties, contradictory reports emerged in some media outlets. France 24 in Arabic as well as the Al-Qahira News agency reported in their versions that "injuries were recorded" as a result of the explosion at the plant, contrary to the official announcements by the Qatari Ministry of Interior.
In addition, Telegram channels identified with regional opposition elements, including the 'Rased Al-Ado' channel (identified with positions critical of Gulf states and Israel) as well as the 'Sam Syria News' network, described the incident as an explosion of "gas tanks" and circulated reports of "columns of smoke rising above Doha," while emphasizing the uncertainty regarding the causes of the explosion in the initial reports.
