Iran sets conditions: The understanding agreement with the U.S. mandates a withdrawal from Lebanon
According to reports in Al Jazeera and Al-Ilam Al-Harbi, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that "ending the war in Lebanon is an integral part of ending the war against Iran." According to Araghchi, in a document of understandings signed with the U.S., any military attack by the "Zionist entity" or its continued presence in Lebanon will be considered a direct violation of the agreement. Araghchi emphasized that without an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, "the war will not end."
At the same time, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam defined the understandings between Iran and the U.S. as a "positive factor promoting peaceful solutions." In a joint statement, they affirmed Lebanon's adherence to its position in the negotiations in Washington, which demands a ceasefire and a full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri expressed cautious optimism regarding the survival of the ceasefire, noting that Tehran "wove the agreement with precision." Berri rejected the idea of "experimental zones" and called for a rapid Israeli withdrawal from the districts in southern Lebanon within the 60-day period defined in the negotiations. In response, sources in the 'Lebanese Forces' expressed skepticism, claiming that the agreement will not practically affect the field.
Sources affiliated with the "Axis of Resistance," such as Al Mayadeen, emphasize that Iran succeeded in forcing Lebanon as a central clause in the document of understandings. Conversely, the newspaper 'Haaretz' cited that the agreement contains no explicit commitment to an Israeli withdrawal from the south, which indicates significant gaps in versions between the parties regarding the implementation of the agreement.
