[108344] Doha Talks Round: Oil Price Decline and Contacts Between Washington and Tehran
Diplomatic Contacts and Their Impact on the Energy Market
Following the conclusion of a round of technical talks in Doha, France 24 reports that the parties reached an agreement on establishing a "communication channel to monitor violations" of an existing memorandum of understanding. The talks, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, also addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and frozen Iranian assets. Al-Sabah Iraqi Newspaper quotes Trump as saying that "contacts with Iran are progressing positively."
Simultaneously, the energy sector is responding to the diplomatic developments. While a slight increase was initially reported, Lebanon News and Al-Mamlaka Channel point to a sharp decline in oil prices, with US crude oil contracts falling to $67.79 per barrel, and Brent crude trading around $70.7 per barrel, this following an overall drop of about 3% in the last two days. Anadolu Agency notes that Iran has exported about 50 million barrels of oil since the lifting of the siege, with a monthly average of 1.66 million barrels per day.
Economy and Reforms in Iraq
In the Iraqi arena, Lebanon News reports that the New York Times confirms that Washington has resumed dollar transfers to Iraq after months of suspension. At the same time, Al-Sabah Iraqi Newspaper highlights the extensive fight against corruption, quoting General Petraeus as arguing that "the anti-corruption campaign represents the beginning of restoring state authority." The newspaper notes that the government plans to open Iraq's ports to foreign investment, including investments from Turkey, and is working to improve the quality of services and reduce operating costs in hospitals.
Gold Market
In Egypt, Sputnik Arabic reports on volatility in gold prices against the backdrop of the dollar crisis. Dr. Heba Mohamed Khairy suggests an asset diversification strategy for investors, consisting of 60% gold (bullion and coins) and 40% other investment channels. Meanwhile, gold is recording an increase of about 1% in spot trading, crossing the $4,067 per ounce threshold, while silver is surging 1.6% above the $60 per ounce threshold.
